In the summer season, a question lingering in people’s minds in: how can I get rid of unwanted hairs without resorting to wax or blade epilation? Frequently making both women and men uncomfortable, that question about presence of excessive body hair can be answered by means of a very efficient esthetic method: pulsed light.

The three phases of growth of unwanted hairs

Did you know that hairs have three phases of growth? They are:

  • Anagen: first, hairs develop from the follicle and lasts from 2 to 6 years;
  • Catagen: then, they grow and last, approximately, 2 to 3 weeks;
  • Telogen: Finally, hairs fall and last, approximately 2 to 4 months.

Understanding the growth phases

  • Anagen: proliferation phase of the matrix cell, resulting in growth of the hair shaft. This is the target of intense pulsed light therapy.
  • Catagen: transition between the Anagen and Telogen phases, represented by the atrophy of the follicle and death of the hair;
  • Telogen: when the hair detaches and the follicle enters rest, or latency.

Wavelengths for epilation

Removal of hairs: the filter varies from 640nm or 690nm to 1200nm.

Photoepilation Treatment with Intense Pulsed Light  

Photoepilation is nothing more than the elimination of unwanted hairs through intense pulsed light; that is, emissions of different intensities of light to remove those hairs. These emissions of light have an affinity with melanin (resembling a magnet) present in the hair shafts, which by absorbing light selectively, receives an elevate temperature and destroys the germinative cells present in the hair bulb.

The ideal skin for the application of IPL are the ones with lighter phototypes or less pigmented, not eliminating white hairs, neither blond, red or too thin, and nor being recommended, for darker or black skins. This technique of removal of unwanted hairs is currently the less aggressive available in esthetics.

Unlike wax epilation, photoepilation does not require that the hairs are very long. On the contrary, the patient must remove them completely with a blade, so that the ILP treatment can be applied.

Damage caused to the skin due to the use of wax and blade in the removal of hairs

Throughout time, the excessive use of wax and/or blades to remove unwanted hairs can be very aggressive to the skin. Results from this aggression are: darkening of the area and appearance of spots, dryness, ingrown hairs, bad odor, allergies, folliculitis, and even rashes. This damage will become more serious in the hotter seasons, resulting in skin irritation.

On the other hand, IPL eliminates the growth of hairs, clearing the darkened region and making the skin healthier and prettier.

Duration of the Intense Pulsed Light treatment

No method of removal of unwanted hairs is 100% definitive. That is true because any therapy will only be effective in the anagen phase, and there will always be cells in the epidermis, even in a smaller quantity, which are responsible for the growth of new hairs. ILP therapy has a prolonged action; however, the body will tend to develop a body protection, recovering the structures.

Difference between IPL and laser

Compared to laser, intense pulsed light is polychromatic therapy, non-coherent, non-collimated therapy with applications in dermatology, angiology and esthetics, also presenting lower power, greater area of action, lower temperature modulation by cut-off filters and lower cost.

Know the difference between depilation and epilation

While epilation means the removal of unwanted hairs integrally, including the structures under the skin, depilation is Regarded as the action of removing hairs from the surface of the skin, without affecting the internal structures.

Fitzpatrick Classification Scale

Before any skin treatment with intense pulsed light, it is of utmost importance to use the Fitzpatrick scale of skin types as a basis to evaluated the phototype of your patient.

This norm applies the following specifications:

  • I: pale white skin, sensitive to sunlight, always burns and gets red easily, never tans;
  • II: white skin, sensitive to sunlight, burns and gets red easily, tans with difficulty;
  • III: cream white skin, or fair skin, reasonably sensitive to sunlight, gradually tans, sometimes has a mild burn;
  • IV: light brown skin, with normal sensitivity to sunlight, rarely burns, and tans easily;
  • V: dark brown skin, very little sensitive to sunlight, very rarely burns, tans very easily;
  • VI: skin without sensitivity to sunlight, never burns.

Other treatment indications of Lyra

Besides unwanted hairs removal, Lyra is also indicated for the treatment of acneic skin, telangiectasia, rosacea, hyperchromia and cutaneous photoaging (rejuvenation).


  • Avoid exposure of the treated area to sunlight for, at least, 15-20 days after the application, the patient cannot be tanned and the patient must apply SPF30 sunscreen cream daily. See further information on precautions here.



  • Make sure you evaluate, at each session, the conditions of the skin in the area to be treated and the real phototype at the moment of the session;
  • Make sure you inspect the treatment area during and after the treatment and interrupt it if there is an adverse reaction.
