Esthetics for Third and Fourth Ages

Nowadays, esthetics for the Third and Fourth ages has been gaining strength, and the market seeks to gradually reach this audience. It is observed that, in a biological point of view, the Third Age is constituted by people between 50 and 77 years old, and the Fourth Age by people between the ages between 78 and 105. According to 2018 data collected by Brazilian Institute IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the life expectancy of the average Brazilian reaches 76 years, and 1 out of 4 Brazilians is 50 years old or older.

In most cases, the skin of Third or Fourth age people demands greater care, for they tend to be more sensitive and fragile; therefore, prophylactic treatments must be implemented with the objective of preventing common diseases which originate from ageing.

The ageing process is progressive, and the morphological and physiological alterations are more evident through the years.  The aspect of the skin, in turn, reveals if the skin had been taken good care of, how much care had been taken, the genetic factor, and of course, it also reflects healthy and unhealthy habits, such as stress, alcohol consumption,  unhealthy eating, smoking (considering an audience who lived in days when smoking was regarded as elegant), exposure to pollution, cold weather, temperature changes and humid heat. It is also important to consider effects which can generate more drastic marks to the skin: thinner, drier skin, which was oily in youth, when more fragile has greater propensity to suffer lesion, develop spots, redness, opaqueness and loss of elasticity. More damaging still, it can also develop skin cancer.

This physiological regression occurs in the following manner: decrease in the activity of fibroblasts, and subsequent reduction of collagen and elastin production, cellular renewal, production of serum and of the hydrolipidic barrier, negatively affecting immunological defenses.

Considering these effects, the esthetics industry now starts to look at Third and Fourth aged people more closely. As mentioned before, the demand for care increases due to the concerns of this target audience with their health.  There is, indeed, a high demand for esthetics treatments so that the patient can have access to a feeling of well-being and a better quality of life, to enjoy even more their retirement years and their free time.
